Questions, answered.

The things Wisconsin businesses ask us most — the plain-English version. Don't see yours? Just ask.

How can I tell if an email from my CEO asking for a gift card or wire transfer is fake?

All emails like this are more than likely a fake. Assume Fake until you can call and ask your Manager/CEO if these are legit.

If you have already sent moneys and realized it was a fake, report the actions to your manager and advise to go to ReportFraud.ftc.gov and report the incident.

Is a 12-character password enough anymore, or do I need passphrases?

Use 16+ characters for banking, email, and password manager master keys. A 12-character random password is acceptable only for low-value accounts or if protected by Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

What is the difference between traditional antivirus ( Mcafee, Norton, Webroot) and Manged disaster Response (MDR)?

Traditional antivirus is reactive. You are paying for the mistake after it has happened. MDR actively looks for hidden attackers, sets traps for attackers to reveal themselves, filters out the noise, and contains then mediates the attack. All reporting to the organizational manager the severity of what is going on in real time.

Traditional Analogy:
Antivirus = smoke detector, tells you what happened, but up to you to put out the fire.
MDR = Fire Alarm company cooperating with local fire department to not only alert and confirm the smoke detection, but respond to the incident in a timely fashion so the small smoldering fire does not become a damaging fire.

I am a health care provider, and I have to follow all HIPPA regulations. What security measures should I put in place for IT security and protect my organization ?
  1. HIPAA compliance – IT professionals help protect electronic protected health information with the required administrative, physical, and technical safeguards under the Security Rule.
  2. Better safety and security – they can reduce cyber risk, spot weaknesses, and respond to security incidents before patient data is exposed.
  3. Staying current – they help update systems, manage evolving security practices, and keep up with HIPAA guidance, which matters because health IT environments change quickly.

In plain language, an IT professional helps protect patient data, lower legal and financial risk, and keep the practice running smoothly.

What does it mean when my computer states Your Connection is Not Private (or Security Certificate Error )

1.) Expired SSL certificates – The website owner forgot to renew their security certificate, making data transmission unencrypted.

2.) Incorrect device clock – A user’s computer or phone has the wrong date and time, causing the security handshake to fail.

3.) Network hijacking – Public Wi-Fi or local security software is intercepting the connection to inspect internet traffic.

What could a 500 internal server error message on my computer mean?

1.) Server code bugs – A generic catch-all error indicating a website’s code crashed or encountered an unhandled exception.

2.) Database failure – The web server cannot communicate with the database to load required information.

3.) Corrupted files – A recent software, plugin, or theme update corrupted core configuration files.

What could a 404 not found error message on my computer mean?

1.) Broken links – A website owner moved or deleted a web page without setting up a proper redirect.

2.)Typing mistakes – A user manually mistypes the website URL in their browser address bar.

3.) Server-side changes – The website’s internal directory structure changed, making the old path invalid.

What are some reasons an App would crash?

1.) Memory or storage issues – This means the device or app does not have enough workspace or space to save things.

2.) Memory Leaks – A memory leak happens when an app uses memory but does not give it back when it is done.

3.) Network Instability and API Failures – This means the app is having trouble talking to the internet or to another service it depends on.

4.) Internet connectivity – This simply means the device is not connected to the internet well enough for the app to work.

Why is my screen frozen on my computer?

1.) Resource overload: RAM or CPU ( memory) gets maxed out when too many apps or browser tabs are open.

2.) Overheating: dust buildup, blocked vents, or failing cooling can make the system lock up.

3.) Driver or software issues: outdated drivers, operating system errors, malware, or buggy apps can cause freezes.

Why is my devise running so slow?

Here are some common reasons your computer may not be working.

1.) Too many programs or browser tabs open at once, which can use up CPU and RAM.

2.) Not enough free storage space, especially when the hard drive is almost full.

3.) Too many startup or background programs running without you noticing.

Why is it important to keep my computer updates current?

1.) Security – updates patch vulnerabilities that hackers could exploit, helping protect personal and business information.

2.) Performance and stability – updates often fix bugs, improve speed, and reduce crashes or glitches.

3.) Compatibility and features – staying current helps your computer work with newer software, devices, and useful new features.

Why is it important for me to restart my computer?

1.) It clears RAM and frees up memory, which helps your computer run faster.

2.) It completes software and security updates that often do not fully apply until a restart.

3.) It fixes frozen apps and small software glitches by shutting down stuck background processes.

4.) It can improve internet and network problems by refreshing network settings.

What do I do if my Internet / WIFI quits working?

“Restart, Relocate, Reconnect”

1.) The 30-Second Power Reset (Fixes: No Connection & Router Glitches)

  • Unplug the power: Tell them to pull the power cord out of the back of both their modem and router.
  • Wait 30 seconds: Do not plug it right back in; the hardware needs a moment to completely drain its temporary memory.
  • Plug it back in: Plug the modem in first, wait two minutes for the lights to steady, then plug in the router.
  • Why it works: Just like a computer, routers get bogged down with data clutter over time, and a restart clears the digital pipes.

2.) The Physical Checkup (Fixes: Weak Signal & Dropped Connections)

  • Move to the open: Ensure the router is out in the open, elevated on a shelf or table, and not hidden inside a closet, behind a TV, or on the floor
  • Avoid metal and concrete: Thick walls, metal appliances (like microwaves and refrigerators), and large mirrors block Wi-Fi signals.
  • Shorten the distance: If the signal drops in specific rooms, they are likely too far away, and they may need a Wi-Fi extender or a Mesh system.

3.) Clear the Device Congestion (Fixes: Slow Speeds & Overloaded Networks)

  • Forget the network: On the glitching phone or computer, go to Wi-Fi settings, select “Forget this Network,” and log back in with the password.
  • Disconnect old tech: Disconnect smart TVs, old tablets, or gaming consoles that aren’t actively being used but are hogging bandwidth in the background.
  • Try a wire: If a vital device like a work laptop keeps dropping, plug it directly into the router with an Ethernet cable to bypass wireless interference entirely.
